INTRODUCTION

Britain 1942, and the first inmates arrive at a remote military psychiatric rehabilitation camp.

HMS Standard is the Royal Navy’s answer to rising mental illness and insubordination in its ranks. A ticket there could mean a way out of the terrors of war, but also the lifelong social stigma of being either mad or a coward.

Only a handful of new arrivals are traumatised by action; most have struggled with illness, neglect and scorn all their lives; some are ‘malingerers’, feigning psychosis to escape service. Under pressure from the Commanding Officer, staff at the camp attempt to heal the sick and weed out the duplicitous.

Stone Frigate is a psychological live action role play, designed for 30-40 players, focusing on themes of social stigma, control and fear.  The style of play is realistic social drama, with emphasis on the relationships between inmates and camp staff, who ultimately hold the inmates’ future in their hands. It is gender neutral, with all characters open to both male and female players.

Set in locations spanning a former hunting lodge and specially constructed barrack in the north of England, Stone Frigate recalls an almost forgotten detail of war history, drawing on historical records and evidence from relatives of those who were there.

Stone Frigate will take place 27 February–1 March 2015 in Kielder, Northumberland.
